Nutri System

Nutri System sat down with this group of guys to chat with them about the NutriSystem program, their weight loss, and getting "back in the game."

NS: First, a little background about you guys. What convinced you to lose weight?

Dan: (laughs) I think people know my story by now. It was harder and harder to keep the weight off since retiring, and I'm on TV so people got to see me all the time with the extra weight. Plus, I have bad knees, so the extra weight didn't help. It was frustrating.

Steve: When I retired, I said I wanted to get to 215 pounds and 3 years later, I was still saying I wanted to get to 215.

John: Well, it's obvious by people who have ever seen me that I was overweight and I needed to lose weight. And with a four-year-old and a two-year-old at home, chasing them around was getting to be too much on the old body.

Mike Golic: (laughing) Well, it's probably not the best visual in the world, but one of my eye-opening moments was one time when I got out of the shower. I saw myself in the mirror and I thought, "Oh my God! What have you done?" It was a realization of: you look awful. It really was. It brings you down, and I think it shows.

Another defining moment also happened during my radio show, which is also televised on TV. I was doing the show on the road in Cleveland and my parents were there, so not only was this a show that millions of people were listening to and watching, my parents were there as well. I remember my parents came in at the break. I went down to give my mom and dad a hug and my mom, she's very straightforward. She looked at me and said, "This is the worst you've ever looked." I thought, wow, nice to see ya, too. But that's my mom. So, of course, doing a radio-type of shtick, my partner got a scale on the stage. He basically mocked me on air about what my mother had said, so he wanted to weigh me—because I said that there was no way I was over 300 pounds. So they got that scale and sure enough, I was 313 pounds. It was the highest I ever was. My mother was right.

Ultimately, though, I needed to lose weight because I'm a real family guy. I have three kids and a beautiful wife, and I just love spending time with them and being involved with their lives. I want to be around them, and the way things were going, it wasn't going to happen. There's diabetes in my family; was that going to lead to something? There has to be a reason for why you want to do something and that reason for me was to be around my family. I decided to do everything I could so I'd be around as long as I could.

Sean: I'm always in front of the camera in my job now, and the camera doesn't lie. When you go on camera and you sit there and you stare at yourself, it's like when you listen to your voice on your phone message and you say, "That doesn't sound like me. I don't sound that bad." So you get up there on camera and you almost fool yourself. Then all of a sudden somebody comes up, like my buddy Charles Barkley did, and says, "Hey, man. You're getting fatter than me." So when friends and family start saying that, even though they're joking there's a little truth to it. I said to myself, "I've got to make a change." I was ready to lose some weight. I needed to.  Click here to review program details

Man Nutrisystem

Jim: After playing pro ball for seven years, my knees were shot and I put on weight—all the way up to 291 lbs. I badly needed a change.

Cris: If you look at the athletes and you look at what we've done, the pounding, the working out…I needed to relieve the stress off my joints. When you're talking about carrying around an extra 10, 15, 20 pounds, it's just like you have a dumbbell around your waist all the time. So for me, it's not as much a matter of how I look or how much I weigh. Because you can look a certain way, you can put clothes on to cover up things. But when you get up in the morning and get on the scale, that scale doesn't lie—and when you get up and your joints are aching, they don't lie, either.

Scott: I'm a high-school football coach. Every day I'd keep jumping on the scale and seeing the weight go up. Every day I was outside with the kids running up and down the football field and each day it got harder. So I told myself that I needed to do something about my weight.

Mike Eruzione: I really needed to do something at this point in my life. I'm 52 years old. I've had two surgeries on my knees and I just didn't feel healthy, so I thought it was time for me to make a change—and not just a food change, but a lifestyle change.

NS: Why did you choose man NutriSystem? Was it Dan Marino's influence?

Jim: Hey. Let's be REAL clear about this. I got Dan Marino on this program. (laughs.)

Dan: (laughs) Stuckey's right. Last February we were in a celebrity golf tournament and I was shocked when I saw him. He'd lost so much weight. So he told me about Nutri System.

Jim: We've built up trust over the years, so Dan heard me out. I just told him, you know it's easy, it works. Here's how you do it. He said, "I'm there."

Scott: For me, it was a great program because it allowed me to eat lots of great food that I enjoy eating normally.

Sean: I've tried to lose weight before. But anytime there's been a diet product, it's one of those that either sticks to the roof of your mouth or you go on it for two weeks and can't continue to eat it—so you get right back off it. When I saw Dan—not only the commercial but when I saw him in person—I said, "I've got to have what you're having."

Nutri System Online Weight Loss

John: I saw Dan on the commercials and I thought, you know what? What better opportunity to lose weight than join the team that a hall-of-famer's involved in?

Mike Golic: As you get older, the metabolism slows down and there just comes a point I think for everybody, especially former athletes but it can be true for everybody, where you see yourself and you say, you know what? This is enough. I hit that point where I needed to do something. I started looking around. I was having a conversation with Dan and he was telling me about Nutri System online weight loss and how it's regular food but it's going to teach you control. I was sold.

Steve: Well, I joined Dan's team because I always wanted to be a teammate of Dan's. Plus, I saw that NutriSystem was very simple and this was the only way I could do it—and simplicity was actually something that really was a priority to me. So now I'm on Dan's team, I'm 22 pounds* lighter and I'm feeling good about life.

Cris: What made me really consider joining Dan's team was that I saw what it did for him firsthand. Working with him all the time on TV and using the same dressing room, I could see him all the time—in his best shape and his worst. I saw just how much more comfortable he was getting back to his playing weight. I really wanted to lose 10 or 20 pounds, and once I saw his results on NutriSystem, I knew it was something I had to do for myself. C'mon, if Dan could do it, I knew I could.

I really wanted to be able to eat but still have some enjoyment in life. The worst thing about going on a diet is you don't feel like you're going to be able to eat and you're going to starve yourself. So I had to have some type of program where I could really monitor what I was putting into my body, because I knew I wasn't going to burn it off the way that I was used to during my playing years.

Mike Eruzione: I was playing golf in Ireland with Danny and I was asking him a lot about Nutri System online weight loss. He was telling me how he does it, and what it's done for him. He told me that I've got to get involved in this.

NS: What do you like best about Nutri System?

Mike Eruzione: I like the fact that I can eat five times a day, which is pretty good. But I also think one of the key things is the fact that I'm learning how to eat. I think the NutriSystem diet has helped me when I travel (because I do travel a lot) and I now know what I can order, what I can't order, when I should eat, and how I should eat—and I think that's a big plus for me.

Cris: For me, it's all about the food: the quality of the food and the variety. I'm a guy who likes sugar. I always love sugar or something sweet at night. So for me, the desserts really took me over the edge and really convinced me the NutriSystem weight loss program was something I could do.

Plus, it was a lot easier than I ever thought it would be. No counting, no measuring, even for a knucklehead like me, it's a no-brainer. (laughs)

Sean: The food's awesome. It tastes great.

John: I've tried so many different things to try to lose weight over the years. The things I like about it is one, it works; and two, the food is very good. This is great food: great taste and it fills you up and you lose weight doing it. So that is why I got involved.

Mike Golic: Well, the best thing about the NutriSystem weight loss program for me is the fact that it's real food. I mean, there are so many programs out there where it's not real food, so even if you lose some weight, you're going to go off it at some point and you're going to gain weight back. With NutriSystem, it's regular food. What you learn is portions. So you're eating real food, you're just learning to eat it in the right proportion. That really helps for a guy like me who was a big ol' fat defensive lineman. All of a sudden when you're done playing, you realize you better calm down your eating a little bit or you're going to balloon in weight.

Jim: The biggest thing for me is it's convenient—everything that I'm supposed to be eating is right there. I don't have to freeze the food, and I'm not making shakes. I'm not hungry. The food is good. But it was the portion control that helped me lose this weight. It was fantastic.

Scott: I enjoy eating the food every day and just following the program. It wasn't tough, either.

Steve: I was introduced to NutriSystem and in seven weeks, I dropped the weight and it was easy. I never felt like I was hungry. I'm at 215 pounds, and it's been so easy…it's ridiculous how easy it was and how good I feel now at 215 pounds. I'm very excited about the finished product.

NS: Do any of you have your own favorite foods?

Steve: I like the breakfasts, the pastas, and the soups.

Sean: These are my three favorites. There's pasta, and it tastes like right out of the restaurant. There's mac and cheese, which is my favorite. 30 seconds for mac and cheese? Please. And the best one of all, of course, is the Salisbury Steak. (laughs.)

John: I love the macaroni and cheese with beef. I love the rotini with meatballs, and the lowfat granola cereal. I love it all.

Mike Eruzione: I think my favorite foods are the afternoon lunches. The soups and the different pastas. The desserts are pretty good, too. I don't normally eat desserts, but now I have some of the desserts and they're pretty cool.

Jim: Man NutriSystem has great meals. Beef, pasta, pot roast. Any meal that guys love.

Cris: Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal. That's my favorite. I also like the muffins for breakfast—gotta have ‘em. And for lunch, I love the tuna; I put it in the refrigerator, get it cold, perfect, just the way I like it. And the pizza.

NS: How has losing the weight made you feel?

Sean: It's changed my life—I have a lot more energy and with my schedule, I need it, so it's been awesome. It's been a tremendous change of lifestyle. I'm not a big diet guy. I don't look at this as a diet and I know it's cliché to call something a change of lifestyle, but for me it really is. I feel better, and I look better on camera.

Cris: I agree with what Sean said. I have a tendency to put the weight on in my face and that's where I really saw the results—in my face, in my cheeks. It's hard to believe that people don't think I'm 40, or that I look so much younger. For me, especially being on television and being part of the media, that's important.

The day I retired, I took my measurements and put them on a piece of paper. I put that in my drawer where I keep little valuable things. I thought that that was the last day I'd ever see that weight, but here I am today, 216 pounds again.

Mike Golic: One of the best things is I feel good about myself. That's first and foremost. My wife does, too. My wife and I spend a ton of time together, so we do a lot of the same things and this was something that we could do together. She's doing the program with me and we work out together all the time, either in the gym or taking walks. We eat our NutriSystem meals together. We can also keep an eye on each other with what we're eating. So we do get to share in this. It's really been fantastic.

Mike Eruzione: I think I look good. A little while back, I was thinking, "You know what? I'm an Olympic champion. I want to look like one." I didn't want to be some guy that people say, "Geez, that guy used to play hockey?" So I wanted to look better, I wanted to look thinner, and I wanted to be healthier. NutriSystem enabled me to do that.

John: It was so hard for me to lose weight after I got done playing, and even during my playing career, because I had so many operations. I've had ten operations on my knees. I've had cancer surgery. I've had shoulder operations. So even just normal walking got to be a problem and once that became a problem, then the weight started coming on because it's not like I was ever any good at controlling what I ate. Small portions weren't for me; if I was going to eat, I was going to eat everything. With this program, now it's more portion-controlled and, as I said before, the food is outstanding. I know that this is a thing that's going to take the stress and the pressure off my knees, so I can continue a healthy and full life into my mid-to-late 40's and into my 50's and 60's hopefully.

Steve: You know, what I like best about where I'm at right now is that the pants that literally four or five weeks ago were a little bit snug on me are feeling good. They're fitting loose and it makes me feel like I'm making the progress that I was looking for.

Jim: Well, I jumped into it with full force. I called NutriSystem, and started the program immediately. I lost 60 pounds* and I've kept it off now for over a year, so I feel great. Now I'm walking the golf course again. I feel like a million dollars.

Hey, Marino thinks he's skinny, I'm the skinny one! He's lost 20-something* pounds. Here's 60 pounds*! (laughs)

Scott: Yeah…that Dan Marino. Quarterbacks. They don't eat food. Linemen, we eat food. I lost 100 pounds*.

Losing 100 pounds* was the greatest thing I've ever done besides playing pro football; 100 pounds* lighter, I feel light on my feet. My playing weight was 310 and now I'm 285. The last time I was 285, I was in college. I can keep up with the kids on my team now.

NS: How were the reactions from your friends and family?

Mike Golic: Now my wife likes what she's seeing, and so do I. Hey, I may have a face for radio, but now I have a body for TV! (laughs)

Steve: Well, my wife tells me I look great. In fact, we just looked at some Christmas pictures with our four kids the other day. My wife said, "Honey, I want to tell you something. You always look good, but in these pictures, you look really good." I'm not going to lie to you. I'm a 41-year old guy, but when my wife tells me I'm looking good, it makes me stick my chest out a little bit. I feel good about myself.

John: Now it's a little different ball game when I tee it up on the golf course. No more fat jokes. My wife gave me one of the best reactions. She told me that since I've started losing weight on NutriSystem, I'm not as disgusting as I used to be (laughs), and that I'm not half-bad looking anymore. So whenever you can get compliments from the wife, something's working.

Mike Eruzione: You know, it's amazing how many people tell me I look younger. The other day, when I was on an airplane, a flight attendant I hadn't seen in awhile looked at me and said, "What happened to you?" But the best story I had was when I was playing golf about two weeks ago. The greenskeeper, who I've known for many years, came up to me and said, "Is Mike Eruzione in this group?" And I said, "Fitzy, this is me! It's Mike." He didn't know it was me! My buddies even wanted to know what I did. They thought I dyed my hair!

Sean: Hey, when you're getting voice mails and text messages from people you haven't talked to in a year, year and a half, people are definitely noticing. Especially women. (laughs.)

Jim: My wife loves the new me. I've got a whole new wardrobe, a whole new body and a whole new lease on life.

Scott: My former teammates haven't seen me yet, a hundred pounds lighter, and I can't wait. And my players can't believe it—now they say I'm the greatest looking coach around. (laughs) And check this out. One day I was going to the gym and realized I'd lost my membership card. They had my old picture in their files and they said, "That's not you." And I said, "Of course not. This is the new me. I look great!" (laughs)

NS: You're part of Dan's weight loss team now. Any words of wisdom for those thinking about joining the team?

Scott: Hey, if a lineman like me can lose weight, so can you.

Steve: You start seeing the pounds coming off once you get on the program. That is the carrot you're looking for. You're looking for results and when it starts happening, that makes it easy to wake up in the morning and say, okay, I'm sticking with the plan.

Jim: I lost 60 pounds* on NutriSystem and the pounds fell off. It really works. I'm glad I did it.

Mike Eruzione: Well, I think if you follow the program, it'll work for anybody.

Cris: Is it eating you like? If so, losing weight is right around the corner. You can do it. I'm on Dan's team, and the benefits are outstanding.

Sean: Are you kiddin' me? Anyone can be successful on this program. If you want to look good, this is the best way to do it. You eat NutriSystem and your life changes. Anybody can do it. Look at the wide variety and array of athletes and people that are doing it. If I can lose 35 pounds*, anybody can.

Mike Golic: I really have been impressed with NutriSystem. I'd really like to stress the word "diet" is just the wrong word to use—NutriSystem is not only a diet; it teaches you, and that's what's lacking in other diets. It teaches you to be smart about what you eat. I mean, that's just the truth. That's what it is.

John: Anyone who says that NutriSystem isn't for men is crazy. They don't know what they're talking about. It's man food for hungry men.

The NutriSystem program is the easiest thing in the world. You get a booklet, you follow what the booklet says, and you're going to lose weight. There's no doubt about it in my mind, 100% guaranteed. If you don't, you've done it wrong because (laughs) I'm not that smart and I don't read well, so for me to be able to do this program and lose weight, anyone can do it. I'm the perfect example of a guy who was a chronic overeater and ate nothing but junk food. Now I'm on the NutriSystem program and nothing has helped my quality of life more than this.

Dan: Hey, the bottom line is that these guys joined my team, lost weight and feel great. You can, too.

Dan's Team: Join Dan's team and lose the weight!
